Email from Principal on Dec. 1

Hello Auguston Community,

Thank you for all your support during a difficult time.  We feel for all of those affected by the disastrous floods that have impacted our community.  Covid-19 and keeping our community safe continues to be a focus here at our school and in the School District.

An Open Letter to Ethan (and his Classmates)

On the heels of our decision to open some of our schools last week, several high school students wrote a version of this letter below to me:

Dear Dr. Godden,

On behalf of several students in the Abby school district, we would like to request that you close the school district completely for the remainder of the week as well as thank you for your prompt decision making in this unfortunate situation.

Pumpkin Patch Event

Students in Div. 10-15 went searching for a pumpkin in Auguston's "pumpkin patch". The pumpkins were used for activities in their classrooms before being taken home.

Thank you Volunteers for picking up the pumpkins & Auguston PAC for sponsoring this event for our students!

Distinguishing the Weather from the Work

As a way of keeping our focus on the teaching and learning in our schools, I have drawn a distinction between the “work”, our primary focus on providing for the educational needs of our students, and the “weather”, the conditions under which we do this work. In uncertain times if we are not careful, we sometimes confuse the two. While it is clearly important to ensure that we are following all the public health protocols, caution must be extended to ensure that this does not become the primary focus of our discourse and practice.

Outside & Online

As we navigate the fourth wave of the pandemic, with an eye to post-pandemic teaching and learning, it has dawned on me that two of the lessons learned from the pandemic might be at odds with each other. With physical distancing being one of the best ways to keep ourselves and kids safe from COVID-19, we saw many classrooms migrate outdoors, at least for part of their instructional experience. This was sage advice given to us by public health, and many classroom teachers were all over it.

Principal's Message

I just wanted to say thank you to our entire Auguston School community for all your support in the month of September.   Students are now settled in their classes and can focus on what is most important which is building relationships with staff and their peers.  Seeing all the students playing together at recess and lunch was my highlight of the month as this brought a great deal of joy to all the students.  We soon forget that they haven’t been able to play together and/or see their group of friends outside in 18 months!

"No Uni for a Toonie" for the Year

Show your School Spirit

In an effort to streamline and reduce cash* being handled at schools we have set up our “No Uni for a Toonie” days with the option to be paid online in schoolcash. This also makes it easier for parents.

We have established a set number of these days (7 “no uni” days) which means that you would pay 7 x 2 = $14 per child one time only and be good for the year!
