Gr. 5 Indigenous Students made drums on Tues, Feb. 15, with Elder Tina and Mr. Colbert, along with other Indigenous students in Clayburn's catchment.

Students were invited to participate in Valentine's No Uni Day by wearing red, white, pink or purple on Monday, Feb. 14. This was our 4th "no uni for a toonie" day (the first one was Abbotsford Canucks on Oct. 18, the second was Costume Day on Oct. 29 and the third was PJ and Christmas Wear Day on Dec. 17). I have a hope that one day we will not have to celebrate Black History Month, that our society, discourse and school curricula will be redolent with the contributions and experiences of Black Canadians, that Black students in our schools will be proud of who they are, that they will see their history and culture in the ecology of their school experiences, and that they will not suffer the legacy of prejudice and racism as their previous generation had.

Over the last few years, it has been my practice to post a “Top 3” January blog related to our educational transformation efforts and ways these ideas might be manifested in the coming twelve months.

Mask Mandate for Students

We have had many students vaccinated in the past week which is fantastic news.  Due to the change in their child’s vaccination status, some parents have enquired if students still have to wear a mask.  The answer is YES.  The K-12 mask mandate does not change with vaccination status.  All district Staff, Middle and High school students who have been vaccinated are still required to wear a mask (as per the guidelines). 

When I was recently asked to share with some of my colleagues how our school district was handling the challenges related to the recent rainstorms and flooding, I could not help but reflect on the numerous calamities we have experienced as a community over the last decade. In addition to the pandemic and disastrous flooding of the last three weeks, our community has endured more than its fair share of tragedies. We have lost more students from a range of misfortune too difficult to recount here.

Hello Auguston Community,

Thank you for all your support during a difficult time.  We feel for all of those affected by the disastrous floods that have impacted our community.  Covid-19 and keeping our community safe continues to be a focus here at our school and in the School District.  

Extended Absences

A reminder to please let your child's teacher AND the school office (auguston [at] abbyschools.ca) know if your child/ren will be away on an extended absence from school (ie. Safe Arrival is limited to 3 days maximum).

On the heels of our decision to open some of our schools last week, several high school students wrote a version of this letter below to me:

Dear Dr. Godden,

On behalf of several students in the Abby school district, we would like to request that you close the school district completely for the remainder of the week as well as thank you for your prompt decision making in this unfortunate situation.
