Intellectual

Our students will learn key academic skills - like reading, writing and math - to encompass the knowledge and processes associated with intellectual development. As learners and meaning-makers, students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding.

Strategy/Goals

Finding joyful literacy and numeracy experiences for our students to help the be engaged in their learning and build a solid foundation for their reading, writing and math skills and fluency.

Early intervention focus and plans for our K/1/2 students including further learning around the UFLI resource and Science of Reading ideas.

Activities

Literacy

Ongoing instruction happening in classrooms and celebrations of reading and student learning, building a love of literacy one book at a time.

Reading support from LSS and EAs – Students who need just a little extra boost in their reading instruction can also receive support from both EAs in our school and from our LSS teacher in the form of reading/literacy support groups. These sessions are in addition to the strong reading lessons happening in their classrooms already.

UFLI is a new (to us) program being implemented in all K classes, as well as some of our grade 1 and 2 classes. UFLI is also used in many of our LSS groups. Science of Reading materials are also being explored at higher levels.

Reading Olympics – This is a school wide challenge meant to boost our literacy skills by encouraging families to read together. Students track their reading for the month of February to earn medals and prizes for themselves, as well as build classroom minutes to earn extra prizes. Our celebration comes together with an ‘Olympic Day’ spirit day where we all dress up in our Olympic or team gear and celebrate a love of reading.

One Book One School – Every year, our PAC generously purchases every family a copy of a book that the whole school reads at the same time. We do fun activities as an entire school that are tied to themes and events in the book. We have a character dress up day, a movie day based on the story, trivia questions, prizes and more! This is an amazing way to celebrate reading together and to explore literacy as a school. Hearing students in different classrooms talking about the same book is amazing! Our first year we read Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White, then we read The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Who knows what we will read together this year!

Numeracy

Strategy/Goals

Finding joyful literacy and numeracy experiences for our students to help the be engaged in their learning and build a solid foundation for their reading, writing and math skills and fluency.

Activities

Ongoing instruction in classrooms and celebrations of numeracy learning, building a love of math concepts and skills.

Math Mania – This is a whole school weekly math question that aims to get kids thinking numerically and stretch their brains. Concepts can include guesstimation, mathematical reasoning, riddle questions and visual challenges. We’ve even explored things like Order of Operations and Algebra! Each week, winners are selected to get a treat for getting the correct answer (and showing their work, of course!)

Chess club – we have a club for those who love strategy! Chess club is open to any student who wants to join, grades 1-5. Students who win our school challenge get to compete in the District competition each year.

Class based lessons, challenges and competitions in math facts, mad minutes, etc.

Data

High participation in math mania each week and too many chess club members to count! Our kids love math!!
