No News for November, let’s do a Family Math Challenge!

As you know by now, our School has begun the implementation of a new School Goal in relation to Math.  We were featured in the recent Superintendent newsletter about how our staff are engaging in “Number Talks” with their students.  At the last PAC meeting, I also taught a mini lesson showing the effectiveness of a number talk and how it can support a wide range of mathematical thinking, mathematical flexibility and number sense.  Number talks are not designed to “replace” the entire Math curriculum but as an activity to boost student confidence and teacher understanding about how their student thinks about math.

I am now encouraging Parents/Guardians to engage in this activity at home as well.

(Read below for Prizes, Yes! Prizes!)

Show your child a picture from the following website:

Ask two questions:

  1. How many are there?
  2. How do you know?

Now have the student explain their thinking.  Write it visually for the student to see and to explain/defend their thinking.  (You can reverse it and the student can do it for you as well!)

(see example in the page header)

Please email Mr. Colbert ryan.colbert [at] (subject: Family%20Math%20Challenge) with your children(s) name and division if you as a family, completed a number talk by December 1st, 2019.  Please email me a short reflection on your experience/what you learned from this number talk exercise.

Your child will be entered into a draw for a $50 Cineplex gift Card if you complete this family math challenge.

Thanks for a great October!

Mr. Colbert, Principal
